Today I visited the Alex and Ani store in my local mall for the first time and I left with two thoughts:
1. I probably don't need to go in there very often, otherwise I will end up purchasing everything in the store and will end up more broke than I already am.
2. I really love the concept behind the company, which is that each piece of jewelry has a particular meaning.
The first necklace that I chose was the "Moonlight" necklace. At first I was drawn to the necklace simply because the crescent moon is the symbol of Gamma Phi Beta, the sisterhood I was apart of during my college career. When I asked the employee the price of the necklace, she also showed me the card that accompanied it, which had an explanation of the necklace's meaning. The card stated,
"Visible in the night sky, the crescent moon and star symbolize light. These bright celestial bodies remind us that light is a continued presence - even in darkness. Keep these lasting friends of the night close as a reminder of that."
After reading this, I had somewhat of an epiphany. Even on the darkest of nights, the moon still shines bright. Even during the darkest of times, you can be the light that shines bright and reminds others that there is still good in the world.
There is so much chaos and negativity in the world now-a-days that it can be easy to get overwhelmed, depressed, angry, etc. Sometimes we allow this to overshadow the good things in life and we often forget that we ourselves can be one of the those good things. When you think about it, being a good person is one of the easiest things that you can do; plus it's free!
As a Christian, I like to believe that the light from within me comes from God and that spreading his love and message is what makes such a positive impact on others. However, I do not believe that you have to be a religious person to be a light in life. Anyone has the potential to have a kind heart and send positive vibes out into the universe.
So as you're living your busy, whirlwind of a life, try to take a moment to remember to be the light amongst all the darkness in the world. All it takes is doing something as simple as giving someone a compliment, holding the door open for a stranger, or reminding someone how much you care about them. You never know who's day you might make, or how rewarding it can be for you in return.
