Today I went to my local Ulta to browse around and see what is new in the realm of makeup. I saw that the controversial Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette was in stock, so I attempted to purchase it. Even though I have heard many negative reviews about the palette, I wanted to form my own opinion. Unfortunately, the shadows crumbled in the palette before I could even make it to my car. I guess all those negative reviews were true!
I was disappointed that the palette was a failure, but there was a silver lining! The cashier told me that the Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette was on sale. Since I love a good bargain, and Urban Decay palettes rarely go on sale, I decided to trade in the crumbling mess for something more dependable.
I have always been a fan of Urban Decay's eyeshadows. The original Naked Palette was my go-to eyeshadow palette in high school and has remained a staple in my collection ever since. Up until now I have not purchased any of the additional palettes in the "Naked" series, but I am excited to create new looks with this one!
This is a great palette because it fills a gap that I have had in my makeup collection for quite some time. I am typically a more warm-toned eyeshadow type of gal, so these cool-toned shadows are a much-needed addition. This palette can be used to create a variety of different looks, including looks that are appropriate for both daytime and nighttime. I will show examples of two very different looks that I created with this palette later on in this post.
The Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette is now on sale for $27.00, originally priced at $54.00. This means that the palette is now selling for 50% off! The palette includes 12 Urban Decay shadows that have a mixture of finishes. It also includes a double-ended brush. The palette can be purchased at Ulta, Sephora, and Urban Decay's website.
All shadows may contain: Mica, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491/77492/77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 75470 (Carmine), CI 77000 (Aluminum Powder), CI 77007 (Ultramarines), CI 77163 (Bismuth Oxychloride), CI 77400 (Bronze Powder), CI 77400 (Copper Powder), CI 77510 (Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide), CI 77510 (Ferric Ferrocyanide), CI 77742 (Manganese Violet).

In order to show the quality and pigmentation of each shadow, I have made swatches of each shade using both my finger and a brush. Finger swatches are on the left, while brush swatches are on the right. A MAC 239 Shader Brush was used to create the brush swatches. All swatches were done on my bare arm; no primers or bases were used.
The first looked I created is natural and perfect for everyday wear. I started by buffing Combust in the crease with a blending brush. I then placed Dirtysweet on the outer half of my lid and High on the inner half using a flat shader brush. I applied Whiskey in the outer corner of my lid with another blending brush. Lastly, I used Thirteen as a brow bone highlight.
The second look I created really complements the smoky theme of this palette. Once again, I began by applying Combust in my crease with a blending brush. I then applied the shade Password to the crease with the same blending brush. Next, I took a flat shader brush and applied Armor all over the lid. To add some depth, I added the shade Black Market to the outer corner of my eye. To finish things off, I mixed Combust and Thirteen to create a brow bone highlight.
Overall, I enjoyed using this palette and I feel that it is a great staple to have in your collection, especially if you love cool-toned shadows or creating smoky eyeshadow looks. Plus, you cannot beat the price point! If you do the math, each shade is $2.25. Considering a single Urban Decay eyeshadow typically sells for $19.00, that is a great deal!
This palette would be great for traveling. It's packaging is very sturdy, and also gorgeous! It can be used to create a variety of different looks, like I've shown up above. This will be convenient when you are having to use one palette to transform your makeup look from day to night.
The one downside that I see with this palette is that several of the shades in the middle of the palette look a little too similar. Other than that, I think it is definitely worth purchasing. I would recommend purchasing it now before they run out for good!
Hits: Whiskey, High, Dirtysweet, Radar, Black Market
Misses: Password, Dagger
I would rate this palette 3.5 out of 5 stars. I love the packaging and I think that the shadows are good quality. However, I don't think this palette would be something you would reach for on a daily basis if you do not enjoy using cool-toned shadows. I still believe it is a good staple for any makeup collection and you cannot beat its current price!
